A New Stephen King Horror Series on MGM+
This July, MGM+ is bringing us a thrilling new series called "The Institute," based on a novel by Stephen King. If you enjoyed the psychological twists of the show "From," you’ll want to give this a look. Interestingly, both series were produced by MGM+ and even share some of the same filming locations. Fans of "From" should find "The Institute" just as captivating.
Chilling Plot and Weekly Episodes
Running through August 24, 2025, "The Institute" will release weekly episodes that pack eight chapters of classic Stephen King horror and suspense. While it might appeal to a slightly younger audience than "From," both shows are about characters plunged into bizarre worlds where they must uncover the mysteries around them. Stephen King’s longtime collaborator, Jack Bender, directs both series, ensuring those signature scary moments we love.
Storyline and Main Characters
Based on King’s 2019 novel, "The Institute" centers on a smart 12-year-old named Luke Ellis, played by Joe Freeman. Luke is suddenly taken to a strange institution that eerily looks like his own room. Tragically, his parents were killed by the kidnappers who brought him there. At the institute, Luke discovers other children with special abilities like psychic and telepathic powers. They are all held in an area called the Front Half.
Ms. Sigsby’s Sinister Plans
The children’s captor, Ms. Sigsby, portrayed by Mary-Louise Parker, runs the institute. She claims their powers are crucial to saving the world. However, her true aim is far darker. She uses torturous methods to drain the children’s powers, sending them to a mysterious place called the Back Half, from which they never return.
Luke’s Fight for Freedom
Luke’s hope for escape lies with Tim Jamieson, a new police officer played by Ben Barnes. Tim patrols the neighborhood at night to keep it safe, but he harbors a mysterious past. As the story unfolds, Luke must figure out if Tim is a friend or foe in his desperate quest for freedom.
"The Institute" promises suspense and excitement only Stephen King can deliver, making it a must-watch for horror fans. With a gripping plot and intriguing characters, it’s bound to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
