There is no doubt that a lot has happened in the past two years, and time has the habit of passing by fast in some cases. However, when it comes to waiting for something specific, minutes feel like hours, and months feel like years. Fans of Noah Centineo will know that the past two years were a dragging journey of wondering what will happen to Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) from Netflix’s beloved spy thriller series, The Recruit, and a waiting game about when the second season will finally be released.
On January 30, The Recruit Season 2 was finally made available to stream on Netflix, and the clumsy CIA lawyer Owen has returned to making everyone’s life harder (or better, occasionally). The first season of The Recruit has already proved that twists and turns are the show’s mojo, because each of the eight episodes is filled with unexpected moments and shocking incidents. Season 2 of Netflix’s widely celebrated spy thriller shocked everyone with a massive twist, though, so let’s take a look at it.

What Is Season 2 of ‘The Recruit’ About?
The second season of The Recruit picks up right where the first one left it off, wrapping up the massive cliffhanger of the season finale back in 2022 in the first few minutes. The last episode of The Recruit Season 1 left Owen in the hands of Karolina, aka Nichka (Maddie Hasson), just after she killed Max (Laura Haddock), who was actually her mother. Season 2 kicks off with Owen’s rescue and Nichka’s recruitment as a CIA asset. Of course, the latter doesn’t come without its problems for Owen.

Despite being off-duty, Owen receives a mysterious letter, and a number of wrong choices later, he is sent to South Korea on a secret mission. Not long after the introduction of Jang Kyun (Teo Yoo), it is revealed that he is the instigator behind the fundamental mission of The Recruit’s second season. What follows is an increasingly dangerous task of finding Jang Kyun’s wife, while state secrets are at risk, Owen’s chances of survival slim, and the people he cares for caught up in the middle of his mission. With the stakes upped significantly, it comes as no surprise that The Recruit is compared to The Night Agent, which is considered one of the best spy shows these days.
Nichka Massively Betrayed Owen in ‘The Recruit’
In order to ensure everyone’s safety and the success of the mission, Owen teams up with Nichka (or, much rather, promises her a large amount of money) to help him save Jang Kyun’s wife from the Russians. Even though she accompanies the group through some intense moments and acts as though she is willing to help them, she actually sold them out to the Russians and the FSB. Keeping this twist in mind, it is surprising that Netflix’s The Recruit was an underrated spy thriller for a long time, but the release of Season 2 is another reminder that Owen Hendrick’s dangerous missions are a must-watch.

To be completely fair, Nichka’s betrayal maybe wasn’t all that unexpected, considering that this is the woman who literally shot her mother and was mere moments away from literally putting Owen in his grave as well. Nonetheless, Nichka’s choices would be interesting to explore further in a potential Season 3, which doesn’t seem unlikely since The Recruit Season 2 received an impressive score on Rotten Tomatoes. Additionally, Nichka’s betrayal didn’t go down as smoothly as she expected because, against her belief, the CIA had some other plans for Owen and Jang Kyun as well.
The CIA Turned on Owen in ‘The Recruit’
Considering Owen’s dangerous situation and the possible reveal of CIA secrets if he had been caught in Russia, the director orders CIA agent Dawn (Angel Parker) to kill Jang Kyun and Owen in order to blame the latter for numerous of the CIA’s mess-ups. Dawn’s task clearly depicted an issue for Nichka since she needed to hand over the two of them alive to get paid (and not face most likely deadly consequences herself). When Dawn was just on her way to fulfill her mission and take down her colleagues, Nichka interfered, and they ended up in an intense knife fight. Even though many fans of the globally successful Netflix series wanted to see more of CIA agent Dawn and watch her stir up some more trouble for Owen, Nichka won their fight and dumped Dawn’s body in a river.
Nichka’s success was short-lived, though, because when she found Owen and revealed her true intentions, he fought her and managed to put her in the trunk of a car. Owen, with the help of his childhood best friend and maybe even girlfriend, Yoo Jin (Shin Do-hyun), eventually manages to rescue the abducted Jang Kyun and his wife, Nan Hee (Lee Sang-hee). They were then chased by Russian coast guard soldiers but were miraculously rescued by the U.S. Navy.
The reason behind this unexpected rescue mission, especially since the CIA wanted Owen dead, is definitely a question that will hopefully be answered in a third season, but it might be that Owen’s connection with CIA general counsel Nyland (Vondie Curtis-Hall) helped him in the end. The Recruit Season 2 certainly brought Owen extremely close to death on far too many occasions, particularly considering that he is just a CIA lawyer, but, who knows, maybe a potential third season of The Recruit will finally focus on Owen training to formerly become an agent. The Recruit is available to stream on Netflix.
