Showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk recently announced that Squid Game Season 3 will debut in 2025, concluding Gi-hun’s story and tying up loose ends. Seven episodes are likely planned for Season 2.
Squid Game’s inaugural season introduced viewers to an evil competition offering players an alluring cash prize of $45.6 billion won, but its second installment takes things even further. Three years after its predecessor, Gi-hun, a down-on-his-luck father, battles to put an end to these deadly competitions once and for all.
Gi-hun’s journey will continue with policeman Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), a powerful puppet master known as Front Man and Hwang Jun-ho’s battles in the final episode of Season Two as they fight over who gets paid by rich, dangerous madmen behind deadly games. Trailer
Squid Game, Netflix’s international hit thriller, recently unveiled a brand-new trailer, depicting Gi-hun’s attempts at ending these games once and for all.
Squid Game’s inaugural season premiered in 2021 and introduced viewers to an excruciating competition that lures competitors with promises of 45.6 billion won. Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), an underprivileged father, enters this lethal competition but soon becomes subject to manipulation from forces outside his control, such as Front Man. When Gi-hun attempts an insurrection against these games however, his attempts fail when Front Man betrays him and kills him with a gunshot to the head.
Gi-hun remains determined to end the games for good and has sought help from detective Jun-ho (Kim Ji-yeon). Together they must battle betrayals from both sides in order to locate where these competitions are taking place and locate it on an island near where it all started.
Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed that Squid Game will have its third and final season sometime between 2025-2026 at the earliest. He notes that although originally planned as one season, due to its depth, two seasons will need to be separated out based on story requirements. Each of the new seasons will likely consist of nine episodes similar to its predecessors.
Synopsis
Squid Game returned in 2024 as one of the most anticipated shows of that year, following Gi-hun’s adventure as he became trapped in dangerous games and forced to make difficult choices in an unpredictable, thrilling season full of twists, turns, intriguing cliffhangers, and horrific murders. Although season two ended abruptly without resolution or closure for viewers, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has since confirmed there will be a third and final season slated for release soon.
Squid Game season 3 will have a shorter episode count than seasons one and two. According to its writer-director, filming of seasons 2 and 3 took place concurrently and will bring this final chapter of Squid Game to a satisfying close.
Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), could have easily used his winnings from season two of Dead Games as a means to leave with his wealth, but instead sought revenge against its creators. Joined forces with police officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), and set out with plans to enter back into the games and take them down from within; unfortunately, however, their crusade came to an abrupt end when Front Man put an end to it at the end of season two.
This new season picks up where season two left off, with Gi-hun and Jun-ho on a mission to reenter the deadly games in order to bring down Front Man from within – but this time they are far better equipped as they now possess all necessary weapons and resources against its creators.
Cast
Squid Game season 3’s cast has yet to be confirmed, but if the second series is any indication it should feature numerous new characters. Some familiar faces such as Gi-hun may return from season 1, who has taken an oath of revenge against those responsible for his friend’s murder. Other participants such as Jun-ho and player 390 may not fare so well; their deaths were hinted at during the post-credit scene.
Season 2 finale of Squid Game ended on a shocking cliffhanger as rebellious gamers attempted to reach the management area and shut down games. Before making it there however, they were attacked by guards led by Captain Park (Lee Seo-hwan aka player 001), only for them to be attacked back by Gi-hun and his allies who managed to kill several guards before being stopped from reaching their entrance by Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) leading to many people dying during an explosive climax that saw many deaths!
Squid Game season 3 remains to be revealed; however, its creator has stated that it was originally written as one long narrative before being split up into two seasons. Therefore, we anticipate the third and final season will cover Gi-hun’s efforts to dismantle sinister games.
